Here you find everything about the improved open source software search

With the improved search form you have the possibility to search easily in different areas of the project information. Currently you can choose between the project name, the abstract and the tags. To simplify searching, we have introduced search-badges. You can reach them by typing “/” in the search bar.

There are different ways to fill the form, depending on your preference.

After typing “/” an auto-complete function is available. You can select an entry with the mouse or the arrow keys. In order not to interrupt your flow of writing, the topmost element of the drop-down list is immediately taken over using the space bar.

After you have selected a search badge, you can enter your search term there. By pressing the space bar you jump back to the main search form or using Esc to cancel the search within the search badge.

Each search badge can be removed using either the x-button or backspace key.

By clicking on the search-badge you can edit the keyword.

Keywords you enter in the main search form directly will be looked up in the project abstract.

You will start the search by pressing Enter or clicking on the search button.

Tip: The all-search-badge is helpful if you are not sure whether you will find anything matching your search term.

On May 26, 2020 was day one of the WeValCo website. We are very proud of what you can find here already. Our vision is to make online cooperation as easy as possible and for this we have set ourselves the goal to create the necessary tools step by step. This also includes searching and finding projects to support them or to be inspired by existing projects. Step one is now realized, the search for international open source projects, for which we have gathered information for you. Of course you can also find existing solutions that you can use for your own software. You can find out how to do this in the following post. Let’s start with what you can expect here:

  1. Get to know the user interface and discover the functions on the main page
  2. Use the search to find projects you are interested in

and here we go…

Get to know the user interface and discover the functions on the main page

We split the main page into different sections.

At top you will find the project search and the language settings:
Navigation bar with open source software search and language settings
All our content is available in English and German. With this symbol Login Icon you will be able to log in, but this function is still under construction.

Below you will find a graphic showing which project phases we will support:
Overview of supported project phases
By clicking the individual phases Icon for project definition phase you will get a more detailed description.

In the next section you will find project cards of top projects. This is a selection of the most interesting projects, which you can also find using the search.

Under “What we offer” you will find detailed information about project phases and information about new developments.

An important element on the main page and all others is the feedback button Feedback Icon. This will take you to a short survey that takes about two minutes and gives you the opportunity to influence the coming development. We are happy about every feedback. You will help us to improve the website and to get the functionalities you need faster.

Use the search to find projects you are interested in

The search bar consists of three elements, the search bar itself, an info icon Icon for information about the open source software search and a search button. The info symbol explains briefly which additional search options are available in addition to the normal keyword search. We are already working on an improved version that makes it even easier for you. Currently, there are three ways to search:

  1. the simple search
For simple search, you enter the search keyword directly into the search bar. This will search in the project description.
  2. search in the project title
If you put “p:” in front of your search term, you can search in the project title.
It is important that you do not enter a space between “p:” and your search term, e.g. with “p:Vue” you search for “Vue” in the project title.
  3. search in the project tags
If you put “#:” in front of your search term, you can search in the project tags.
Again, make sure you don’t use spaces in between.

Of course you can also combine all three options. This will show you projects that fits best to your search keywords, e.g. “vue #:javascript”

On the project card you can find information about the popularity of a project (stars) and how active it is (commits), a short description and a selection of important tags.
If you want to learn more about the project, click on “Details” to get the following detailed view:

Here all tags and the complete project description are listed. The categories are followed by the license under which the project was released. For all further information you can view the source code under “Repository” or visit the project website under “Project”. In one of the next steps we will offer you additional information on how you can participate in the project.
